I've been wanting a hutch or buffet table to store kitchen and bar related items. I've been looking on Craigslist for a few months now, just trying to get ideas of potential furniture and how much it costs. I found a buffet table last week for $50. The price was right, it was ugly and old, ready for some TLC. We drove 30 minutes south of Denver to check it out. There were some nicks but overall it was in pretty decent condition.
On our drive back up to Denver we noticed a strong smoke smell and instantly got irritated at our decision. We had not thought to ask the owner if it was a smoke free house, but it definitely was not.
I quickly googled remedies to get the smell out and found a variety of tricks. The first think I did was wipe the entire thing down with lysol wipes. The idea of having a previous owner and germs weirded me out, so I wanted to make sure I was working with cleaner furniture than when I purchased it. I then mixed half vinegar and half water and wiped down the whole piece with a rag. This was one remedy to get smoke out.
It was finally time to prep the piece. We sanded it down, mainly focusing on the top where there were some nicks and the drawers, where we filled the holes from the old hardware.
Next step was primer. We probably shouldn't have used white primer since we were painting it a dark color, but oh well. This was our first time painting and we were naive and just used brushes. We regret that!
We used rollers for the paint coats... that went by a lot faster! We got the two paint coats on Saturday and Sunday. I read a blog that said to wait up to 5 days to start using the newly painted furniture. This was the hardest part!!

The following weekend we (matt) put on the hardware. This took foreverrrrrrr. Like 5 hours. Not sure if we bought bad hardware (home depot) or if we just didn't do it right, but three nails broke off from Matt using a screwdriver and the wood split on a drawer.
By Saturday morning we finally had the new piece showcased!
